Demolition of Galveston’s Stewart Beach Pavilion is set to begin, marking the end of the structure that has been a Galveston landmark for forty years, Once serving as a hub for beach activities, and as headquarters for the Island Beach Patrol, the building has been a costly nightmare to maintain. Although run by the Parks Board, the beach pavilion is owned by the city of Galveston. The pavilion’s annual cost to maintain the building is $200,000. The cost of demolition is a mere $159,000.
Originally approved in 2023, weather and logistical delays pushed the project to the current date. While there was some discussion and planning for a replacement, it seems now there is no agreement on who or what will replace the current structure.
Stewart Beach is at the tip of the island and has one of the few erosion-resistant shorelines. It is a prime space for local development that would honor its historical significance.
