Galveston Trash Collection Services and Rate Increases

City of Galveston raises trash fees

Effective October 1, 2024, the City of Galveston implemented new sanitation rates to address rising service costs. The updated fees are as follows:

  • Residential Customers:

    • Monthly refuse collection rate increased from $24.97 to $29.49 per unit.
    • A new recycling fee of $3.18 per month is now assessed to cover operational and administrative expenses of the city’s recycling division.

  • Churches:

    • Monthly refuse fees increased from $27.84 to $35.49 for two carts.
    • Each additional cart incurs a fee of $6.

  • Commercial Customers:

    • Monthly fees increased from $53.12 to $70.58, which includes one collection day per week and two carts.
    • Additional carts are available at $34.73 each, with a maximum of four carts per business.

These adjustments were approved by the Galveston City Council to offset increased expenses in diesel, equipment, and labor, which have risen by nearly 25% since 2021. Despite previous measures to enhance efficiency, the sanitation department had been operating at a $500,000 annual deficit. An independent sanitation rate study recommended these new rates to sustain service levels.
